
Cubs blow away Redbirds, 7-2

J.R. Mathes threw eight shutout innings as the Iowa Cubs blew away the Memphis Redbirds, 7-2, in front of 8,628 fans at Principal Park on Friday night.
Mathes (4-3, 3.81) picked up the win in his third start of the year. He allowed just two runners to second base the entire evening.
The Cubs scored early and held the lead throughout the game. Jake Fox and Brad Snyder hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning to start the offense and take a 1-0 lead. Fox, who was 1-for-2, left the game in the seventh inning after being hit with a broken bat while playing first base. Iowa held a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh inning when catcher Chris Robinson drove in two runs with a single. Sam Fuld, who was not in the starting lineup, but stepped in after Fox left the game, reached on a fielder's choice and Snyder singled before the duo scored on Robinson's two-RBI single to center. Snyder had three hits Friday, including a double, and a stolen base. Iowa stole three bases in the game.
Matt Camp drove in a run for the Cubs in the fourth inning with an RBI single and also scored a run in the third after reaching on a walk. Camp was 1-for-4 on the night with two RBI and two runs scored. Matt Matulia had a pinch-hit triple in the ninth inning before Camp drove him in to cushion Iowa's lead 6-0. Camp then scored on Snyder's single for Iowa's seven run final.
The Redbirds, triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, scored two runs off Iowa reliever Jayson Ruhlman in the ninth inning on Matt Pagnozzi's single for the 7-2 final.
The Cubs and Redbirds meet for game two of this four-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Jeff Samardzija will take the mound and face Memphis' Clayton Mortensen.
