Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Rox 3B Phillip Cuadrado went 2-for-4 with three RBI as Brockton won its second straight and tenth in its last eleven games, 8-1, over the New Jersey Jackals in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Rox (17-10) kicked off the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning off of New Jersey starter Dan Griffin. After DH Clyde Williams doubled and moved to third on Mike Conroy's sacrifice, he then came home on C Chris Grossman's sacrifice fly. Scott Wearne, who reached on a hit by pitch, scored to make it 2-0 when SS Dominic Ramos reached on a throwing error by 3B Abraham Nunez.
Brockton exploded for five more runs in the fifth, starting with a single by Grossman that scored two runs, an RBI single by 1B Melvin Falu, and a two-run triple from Cuadrado, making it a 7-0 game. In his last 18 at-bats, Cuadrado has nine RBI and 10 hits, five of them for extra bases, improving his average to .315.
New Jersey (12-16) scored their only run of the evening with RF Kevin Clark's solo home run off of Rox starter Freddy Flores to lead off the sixth inning. Brockton responded with the final run of the evening in its half of the sixth, with CF Keith Brachold swatting a one-out triple and coming home on Cuadrado's subsequent groundout.
Ramos another bright spot on offense for the Rox, going 3-for-4. For New Jersey, DH Jordan Newton also went 3-for-4, while SS Mike DeJesus had a pair of base knocks.
Flores (4-0) picked up the victory, allowing six hits in seven innings of work and striking out three. The righthander is now tied for the league lead in victories with teammate Mike Wlodarczyk and Quebec's Dan Sausville. Jeff Dunn came on in relief and was solid in his professional debut, keeping the Jackals scoreless in two innings pitched.
The Brockton pitching staff allowed just two walks on the evening, keeping with a season-long trend. Rox pitchers have allowed just 70 batters to reach base on walks or hit batsmen all season, 38 fewer than the second-best team in the category.
Griffin (2-1) was tagged with the loss for New Jersey, giving up seven runs in four innings, striking out three and walking two.
Brockton will try to make it three wins in four games against the Jackals on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.; Wayne Lundgren (3-1) will be on the bump for the Rox against New Jersey's Nick Asselin (1-4).
