C's Swept by Eugene Who Closes in on NWL Record
July 3, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - Sunday's game out at Scotiabank Field had every emotion imaginable, but it was heartbreak that was felt last as the Eugene Emeralds (15-2) came from behind to beat Vancouver (11-6) for the third straight time to complete a series sweep with a 6-2 victory in 12 innings.
The Canadians opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning when CF Jon Jones singled and eventually came around to score on a base hit from 2B Bryan Kervin. Vancouver would tack on a second run in the inning when DH Roan Salas smacked a single to center bringing Kervin home extending the lead to 2-0.
C's starter RHP Jesse Hernandez was spectacular over his 5 2/3 innings of work. The native of Grand Rapids, MI struck out five while scattering just three hits as he searched for his second straight victory.
That would not happen for Hernandez on Sunday as the C's ran into trouble just three outs away from a win in front of over 5,000 sun soaked fans out at Scotiabank Field. Canadians manager John Schneider called on closer RHP Drew Permison who was a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities, but struggled giving up a pair of walks and back-to-back singles to 2B Cory Spangenberg and LF Jorge Minyety tying the game at 2-2.
Vancouver's bullpen was roughed up one last time in the top of the 12th inning when University of British Columbia product RHP Brandon Kaye came in and gave up four runs, two earned, as the Eugene Emeralds would go onto win their 12th straight game on the season, one shy of the Northwest League record.
