Vancouver Canadians News Release
SPOKANE, WA - The Canadians fell 11-8 in the final turn of a six-game set against the Spokane Indians [Rockies] Sunday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
Spokane started the scoring with a solo homer from Ryan Ritter in the second then added two more runs on four singles in the third before the C's got on the board in the fourth.
Gabby Martinez began the frame with a double then scored on a two-out RBI single by Josh Kasevich. Estiven Machado and Jommer Hernandez followed with base hits of their own to score Kasevich and make it 3-2, but a first pitch homer from Nic Kent started the bottom of the fourth to help the Indians retake a two-run lead.
A run in the fifth for the Indians scored on a walk, a wild pitch and a triple to pad their lead to 5-2 then Kent went deep again in the sixth to make it 6-2. The Rockies affiliate added another two tallies on three doubles in the seventh to expand their advantage to 8-2.
Vancouver clawed back in the eighth. Consecutive singles from Martinez and Cade Doughty started the frame before a double play moved the lead runner to third with two outs. Kasevich followed with an RBI infield single, Machado singled again then Hernandez drove in Kasevich with a base hit. Another run scored on an error in the next at-bat and when the dust settled it was 8-5 Indians.
After Spokane got three runs on a pinch-hit three-run homer from AJ Lewis in the bottom of the eighth - their fourth homer of the day, tying a single-game season high for the C's pitching staff - the Canadians made it interesting in the ninth. They scored three runs on one hit - an RBI single from Hernandez - plus three walks and an error to bring the tying run to the plate, but the game ended with a flyout and the Indians on top 11-8.
Eight of nine starters reached base and six had a hit. Hernandez's three hits paced the offense while Kasevich had two hits and three walks to reach five times. Martinez and Machado also added two hits apiece. The bottom three hitters in the order - Kasevich, Machado and Hernandez - went 7-for-11 with three runs scored, seven RBI and three walks.
Vancouver will enjoy an off day Monday then return to Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium Tuesday night to welcome the Everett AquaSox [Mariners] for six games. Tickets and more information are available at CanadiansBaseball.com.
