Lake Erie Crushers News Release
SAUGET, Illinois - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, used a stellar performance from Alex Romero (2-1) to take the series from the Gateway Grizzlies (6-6) on Thursday night. Behind seven shutout innings from Romero, Lake Erie (8-4) won a close 1-0 affair.
Grizzlies starter Max MacNabb (1-2) went six innings while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out eight. The only offense that the Crushers managed was in the fourth inning.
Sean Hurley led off the fourth with a walk and later advanced to third after singles by Aaron Hill and Doug Trimble. With one out in the inning, Dalton Wheat hit a grounder to second but the Grizzlies couldn't turn the double play, allowing Hurley to score the only run of the game.
On the mound Romero kept dealing. The right-hander allowed a one-out walk in the seventh but a double play ended the inning. Romero allowed one hit and struck out seven while facing just one over the minimum. His ERA fell to 1.42 on the year.
The best scoring opportunity for the Grizzlies came in the eighth inning against Branden Nunn. A two out walk to Jeff Cardenas brought up Joel McKeithan. He grounded a ball towards the hole that Crushers shortstop Kevin Lachance tracked down. His off-balance throw to first was high and both runners moved to second and third on the error.
Gateway brought in pinch-hitter Trae Santos for Jhonniel Alvarez but Crushers manager Cam Roth stuck with Nunn. The Crushers reliever got ahead in the count and then blew a fastball past Santos to end the inning.
Justin Sinabaldi locked up his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The Lake Erie bullpen accounted for seven scoreless innings in the series, including three from Nunn.
The Crushers will head to River City tomorrow to begin a three-game series with the Rascals. Juan Perez (1-0) gets the start on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 CDT.
