Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers hit into three double plays and stranded four runners in scoring position at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night, in a 9-1 loss to the Joliet Slammers.
The loss for the Crushers (34-48) was their fourth in a row, while the victory for the Slammers (35-48) was their fourth in six games against the Crushers this season.
Both teams scored in the first inning, and it was a one-run game for the first five innings until the Slammers pulled away with a four-run sixth inning.
Carter Bell walked to start the contest and made his way to third on Nate Roberts's double, before scoring on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Roberts came home on Jeremy Nowak's groundout.
The Crushers answered in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Stevens stroked a one out single to right center, and Jose Barraza followed with a RBI double down the left field line to score Stevens.
The lead off batter reached for the Crushers from the second through the sixth inning, but they were never able to capitalize, and hit into three double plays along the way.
Joliet scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to pull away, after leaving the bases loaded in the fifth. Nowak struck again, belting a bases clearing, two out double to left, plating three in the process and he scored later in the sixth on a wild pitch.
The Slammers would get their final three runs in the top of the ninth inning, on a three-run homer to right from Hunter Ridge. It was his second of the season, and it was his third hit of the night.
Michael Carden (3-5) tossed eight innings and allowed just a run on seven hits while fanning five batters to score the victory, while Steve Hagen (0-1) took the loss in his Lake Erie debut, allowing a pair of runs on three hits over 1.2 innings of work.
All but three Crushers hit safely at least once on the night, and Barraza led the way, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, recording Lake Erie's only two extra base hits on the evening.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Brad Duffy (8-3, 3.32) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
