Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers are pleased to announce the addition of former Toronto Blue Jay Minor Leaguer, Luke Hetherington, to the team's Inaugural Season roster. Field Manager John Massarelli expects Hetherington to start in center field this summer and to provide veteran leadership both on the field and in the club house this season.
Hetherington was drafted out of high school by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 9th round of the 2001 MLB draft. He spent seven seasons in the Blue Jays Minor League system, ascending to the club's advanced single "A" team in Dunedin, FL in 2007. His best season was in 2006, playing for the Lansing Lugnuts of the single "A" Midwest League. With the Lugnuts, he hit .297 in 91 games played with 52 runs, 87 hits, 5 home runs and 31 runs batted in. A solid presence in the outfield, he only had 2 errors for a fielding percentage of .986. He split last season between Sioux City of the American Association and the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League.
"Luke is a veteran, athletic center fielder," said Massarelli. "This will be his 8th season of professional baseball and he should provide some quality leadership to a young ballclub. Luke will hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup and patrol ground in center this summer."
Hetherington is the most experienced player signed by the Crushers to date. Combined, the team's veterans, Hetherington, Jodam Rivera (INF) and Paul Fagan (LHP) add more than 19 years of professional baseball to the roster.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team will open its Inaugural Season on June 2, 2009 in a new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon. Season tickets and Mini-plans are on sale now!
