Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-- John Alonso, a 12th round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005, has been signed by the Traverse City Beach Bums for the 2009 season.
Alonso, a powerful first baseman from Orlando, Fla., spent three-and-a-half seasons in the Brewers organization before playing for the Gateway Grizzlies and Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League a year ago. In four years of professional baseball, Alonso has appeared in 203 games, hitting .271 with 21 home runs, 61 doubles, and 132 runs batted in.
"Even though John is just barely 23 years old, he will give us a veteran presence on the field as he enters his fifth season of professional baseball," said Jason Wuerfel, Beach Bums director of baseball operations.
"He is a great athlete and has the ability to play several positions including both corner infield and corner outfield spots," Wuerfel continued. "But what I like about John is his gap-to-gap power that could really help him rack up the extra-base hits in spacious Wuerfel Park. This off-season we are making it a priority to go out and get a middle-of-the-order bat, and adding John is a great start."
The right-hander spent the 2007 season and part of 2008 with the West Virginia Power, a Single-A affiliate of the Brewers, registering a career-high 59 RBI and six home runs in 2007.
Alonso attended Polk Community College (Fla.) after graduating from Bishop Moore High School in Orlando and before being selected by the Brewers with the 355th pick in 2005.
The 6-0, 220-pounder will report to Beach Bums spring training in early May in Traverse City. The Beach Bums open the 2009 season at Kalamazoo on May 22 before opening their home slate against Southern Illinois on May 26 at 7:05 p.m.
