Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers have teamed up with local elementary schools to make a pitch for reading and to strike out illiteracy with a month-long Reading Club program. The goal of the program is to promote the importance of literacy and education among elementary school children while at the same time fostering a life-long love of reading. This first year, fifteen schools and more than 5,000 students have signed up to participate in the program.
At the beginning of the month, each student received a poster to track the number of books read. Readers can hit a home run by reading 20 books, earning two tickets to a Lake Erie Crushers game this summer. Each school will have their own special night at the ballpark, when they will be recognized for their accomplishments and their students will be able to run the bases after the game.
The Crushers will be at Avon Heritage South Elementary on Monday, March 9 at 9:00 a.m. to launch the club and to introduce the team's new mascot to the community. The name of the mascot will be unveiled at the assembly. The Crushers will continue the reading club tour throughout the month making stops at other participating schools to help get the students motivated to pick up a book and read.
