Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio- The Crushers dropped the final game of the series, 2-0, to the Traverse City Beach Bums as the starting pitchers for both teams threw gems, but the Beach Bums took advantage of a mistake in the eighth inning and scored the only runs of the game.

For the Crushers (25-32), the loss puts their record at 6-3 following the All-Star Break and it marks the seventh shutout loss of the season. The win for the Beach Bums (34-24) ends a three game losing streak.

Offense was not the story of the game for either side. The Beach Bums had only two runners reach scoring position until the seventh inning and the Crushers had only one runner in scoring position all game. Austin Prott doubled over the head of Jeff DeBlieux in right to lead off the fourth inning. He would move to third on a groundout but would be stranded there.

For the Beach Bums in the fifth inning, Jose Vargas singled with one out. Yazy Arbelo then popped up in foul territory on the third base side. Brendan Costantino made a diving catch to retire Arbelo who then had a few words with home plate umpire Andy Dudones. Arbelo was ejected in the strange series of events. Traverse City did not score in the inning.

In the seventh inning, the Beach Bums were threatening. Sam Bumpers, who replaced Arbelo, was hit by a pitch. Then with two outs, Greg Harisis walked and Kendall Patrick singled to load the bases. Crushers starter Hunter Adkins worked his way out of the jam by getting Graham Ramos to fly out to center field.

The Beach Bums would score the only runs of the game in the eighth inning. Ladgie Zotkya (0-1) relieved Atkins and Alex Tomasovich singled with one out to start the inning. Vargas then hit a bouncing ball to Costantino at third who tried to make a barehanded play but the throw sailed past Anderson Hidalgo at first, allowing Tomasovich to score from first and Vargas to move all the way to third on the error. After striking out the next batter, Zotkya was replaced by Matt Brankle who gave up a double to Brandon Jacobs that scored Vargas and put the Beach Bums up by two runs.

For the Crushers, Adkins went seven strong innings on the mound, allowing only four hits, walking three and striking out seven while not allowing a run. Zotkya picked up the loss in his first appearance for the Crushers. He went 2/3 of an inning, allowing two unearned runs. Brankle got the final out in the eighth inning and Kolby Moore pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

For Traverse City, Ian MacDougall (7-4) was excellent, allowing only four hits and striking out three Crushers in the complete game shutout. It was his first complete game of the season and he has now had six straight starts giving up less than three earned runs.

The Crushers will begin another three game home series with the Florence Freedom beginning on Tuesday. Lake Erie will throw righty Zach Morton (3-1, 4.04) and the Freedom will start right hander Cody Gray (2-0, 2.33). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
