Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Marion, Illinois-The Lake Erie Crushers were defeated by the Southern Illinois Miners, 6-4 after a late comeback falls short and an excellent pitching performance by Rick Teasley (9-3) shuts the Crushers down early.
With the loss, the Crushers (35-49) have now lost six straight and three out of their last four against Southern Illinois. The Miners (57-29) have now won five straight games and six of their last eight games.
In the third inning, the Miners had two outs when Toby DeMello doubled to the gap in left center. Craig Massey would then walk on four straight pitches. Aaron Gates followed with a single up the middle that plated DeMello and Michael Earley singled to score Massey and put the Miners up by two runs.
In the fourth inning, Jerrud Sabourin singled up the middle for the Miners. Steve Marino singled to move Sabourin to second. Marquis Riley then hit the third consecutive single to load the bases. DeMello grounded into a fielder's choice to third which scored Sabourin. Massey would single to load the bases but Gates grounded out to first.
In the fifth inning, the Miners would add another run of insurance. Frank Martinez singled and moved to second by a Niko Vasquez single. Sabourin came up and hit a single up the middle to score Martinez.
Then, in the seventh inning, Southern Illinois would score what proved to be the winning runs. With Matt Brankle on the mound for the Crushers, Martinez and Vasquez hit back-to-back home runs to put the Miners up by six runs.
The Crushers made it interesting in the eighth inning when Mark Fowler led off with a double and Anderson Hidalgo walked. With runners on first and third and two outs, Boo Vazquez hit his fourth home run of the season to right field to cut the Miners lead in half, 6-3.
In the ninth inning, Eric Green (11) came on to close the door but gave up a one out double to Trevor Stevens. With two outs, Fowler would single to score Stevens and make it a two run game. However, Jose Barraza struck out to end the game and the threat for the Crushers.
For the Men of Crush, Zach Morton (4-4) started the game and went five innings, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs. Kolby Moore pitched an inning of scoreless relief and Matt Brankle allowed two runs over two innings.
