Lake Erie Crushers News Release
SAUGET, Illinois - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, got back to their winning ways on Tuesday night against the Gateway Grizzlies (5-5). Led by the pitching staff and some sensational plays defensively, the Crushers (7-3) blanked the Grizzlies, 5-0.
Nick Deeg (2-0) made his second start of the year for Lake Erie and just like his first outing, he didn't allow a run. The lefty went six scoreless while allowing four hits and striking out five. Deeg has now thrown 13 scoreless innings to start the year.
The Crushers starter would need some help from his bullpen along the way. In the second inning with two men on base, Grizzlies third baseman Joel McKeithan rocketed a ball towards right-center. Lake Erie centerfielder, Cameron Newell went full sprint towards the wall and made a leaping catch as he flipped over the wall to keep the game tied.
Newell's night was far from over. In the fifth inning, his diving catch in center ended the inning and took away a hit from Gateway's. Matt Hearn.
The offense finally gave Deeg a lead in the sixth inning when designated hitter Matt Dacey launched his second home run of the season, making it 1-0. Grizzlies starter Dakota Smith (1-1) went six innings and allowed just the one run on three hits.
Lake Erie got more than enough insurance in the ninth after they loaded the bases with two outs courtesy of two walks and an error. With Newell at the plate, Gateway stuck with reliever Colton Freeman. Newell followed with his first home run of the year, a grand slam to right and the Crushers led 5-0.
Branden Nunn tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Richard McWilliams finished off the Crushers third shutout of the year in the ninth.
The Crushers will send Donald Murray (1-1) to the hill tomorrow while the Grizzlies turn to Alec Kisena (1-1). First pitch is at 7:05 CDT.
