NORMAL, Ill. - After lighting up the scoreboard last night, the Normal CornBelters were unable to put together any offense at the plate in their 6-1 loss against the Joliet Slammers.

"We just couldn't get the bats going tonight offensively, but sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the other team," said Billy Horn.

Derrick Loveless continued to provide love up at the plate for the CornBelters. He knocked his 18th hit and now has recorded a hit every game this season. Then, his second hit of the game would total for Normal's 100 hit on the season to lead the Frontier League.

Normal's best opportunity was in the sixth. Bauer led off with a single then Santiago Chirino followed with hit 609 and then Iriart walked to put ducks on the pond with no outs, but the CornBelters were only able to bring one run across to be down 6-1.

Scott Sebald turned the ball over to the bullpen after five innings, which is his shortest outing this season. Jose Savion and Mark Hendricks pitched shutout ball in the sixth and seventh.

"Scottie (Scott Seabald) went out and he is not going to give you eight innings and four hits every single time out, he wasn't bad. Didn't have a terrible game. Couple key plays behind him we didn't make and they got a couple two-out hits."

Trevor Simms was a bright sight for Normal on Wednesday night. The former Tulane baseball and football player gave up a leadoff single then struck out the next three in his CornBelter debut.

"Our bullpen was lights out tonight, we had four guys come in and each guy comes in one inning at time and boom, boom, boom. We are very happy with that, plus tomorrow's the rubber match so we got a chance to win a series."

Joilet jumped on the board first in the third. After a fielder's choice by Sebald, the Slammers put together back-to-back singles to go up by one. Then Justin Fletcher tried to deke out the runners, but the ball bounced over him and allowed two runs to come home.

This series has been a hard one for the Belters in the field. Once again Joilet got back-to-back singles after an error by Sebald increased the deficit to four. Then a wild pitch brought another run across, and Chris Iriart tried to throw out a runner at home, but the throw was off and the Slammers scored their sixth run.

The Belters couldn't solve it up at the plate and fell 6-1 to Joilet in the second game of the series.

Normal looks to win the series tomorrow with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
