Syracuse Crunch News Release
Cleveland, OH (January 6, 2008) - With just one win in the last 14 games and winless in 11 road games, the Syracuse Crunch put together a 60-minute effort to defeat the Lake Erie Monsters and earn their first win of 2009 tonight at the Quicken Loans arena in front of 2,532 fans.
The Crunch jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 7:51 mark of the first period shortly after its second power play of the game had expired.
Trevor Frischmon carried the puck into the zone and broke to the net from the left side. Frischmon cut towards the middle and got a backhand shot on goal. Following the play, Kevin Harvey found the rebound and punched it past Jason Bacashihua for the 1-0 lead.
The Crunch wasted no time in the second stanza and went up 2-0 just 31 seconds in. Tom Sestito kept a Lake Erie clearing attempt in the offensive zone and broke to the cage. Attempting a poke check, the Lake Erie defender's stick broke in half and fluttered in front of Bacashihua as Sestito was shooting the puck.
The disk hit off Bacashihua's glove and into the net to put the Crunch up by two.
Syracuse added to its lead on a great individual effort from Adam Pineault at the 14:37 mark of the second. Pineault corralled the puck at the left point while covering for his defenseman, weaved his way down the boards through traffic and threw the puck towards the net.
The disk was knocked out of mid-air by Derek MacKenzie, who was waiting on the doorstep and roofed it top shelf to give the Crunch a 3-0 lead.
Lake Erie's Chris Mueller notched a shorthanded goal to make it a 3-1 game with just over four minutes to go in the third frame, but LaCosta shut the door the rest of the way en route to his first win since November 28 vs. Toronto. He finished with 24 saves.
Bacashihua stopped 25 of 28 shots.
CRUNCHABLES: Derek MacKenzie made his return to the lineup after missing six games with an injury and scored his first goal since December 12...The Crunch captured their first win on the road tonight since November 16 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton... Aaron Rome skated in his 300th AHL game tonight....Ryan Garlock appeared in his 100th AHL game tonight.
