Syracuse, NY- Riku Helenius recorded his fourth shutout of the season as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-0 tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Helenius stopped all 23 shots he faced to give the Crunch a 4-3 lead in the season series against the Penguins. Tonight's win, the Crunch's third consecutive victory, brings their overall record to 29-14-2-4 and record away from the War Memorial to 19-6-0-2.
The Penguins held Syracuse scoreless through the first two periods before Kyle Wilson and Brett Connolly were able to get the Crunch on the scoreboard during the final frame.
Crunch center Wilson scored the game's first goal 2:02 into the third period. Wilson backhanded the puck past Penguins netminder Jeff Zatkoff after Pierre-Cedric Labrie's pass found Wilson all alone in front of the Penguins net.
Connolly extended the Crunch's lead to 2-0 by crashing the crease and putting the rebound of an Ondrej Palat shot past Zatkoff 3:25 into the third period.
Wilson scored his second goal of the game at the 11:44 mark of the third by firing a Tyler Johnson pass past Zatkoff from between the circles.
The Crunch travel to Albany for an afternoon clash with the Devils at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18.
Crunchables: The Crunch had a season-low two shots on goal in the second period...With his third period goal Brett Connolly extended his point streak to eight consecutive games...Connolly has 10 points in his last eight games.
