Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, N.Y. - Despite multi-point efforts from five players, the Syracuse Crunch (5-4-3-0) fell 5-4 in overtime to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (8-5-1-0) tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Crunch picked up four of a possible six points during their second three-in-three weekend and have points in their last four contests. Tanner Richard and Dalton Smith each scored twice while Dylan Blujus, Yanni Gourde and Nikita Nesterov each had two helpers.

After the Crunch forced overtime by coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the third, Penguins center Jean-Sebastien Dea beat Crunch netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy 3:21 into the extra session for the OT winner.

After a scoreless first period Dalton Smith opened the scoring with his first goal of the game 2:06 into the middle frame by redirecting a JP Cote drive past Penguins netminder Eric Hartzell. Blujus picked up his first point of the night with the secondary assist.

The Penguins responded 4:25 into the period when Jason Megna snuck a feed from behind the net past Vasilevskiy, assisted by Andrew Ebbett and Beau Bennett.

The Crunch regained their lead with 7:36 to go in the second period when Richard scored his second goal of the season. Richard converted a cross-ice feed from Yanni Gourde at the right post. Blujus was credited with the second helper.

Taylor Chorney scored a power-play goal at the 16:11 mark of the second to tie the game 2-2. Chorney's blast shot from the right wing circle got past the blocker side of Vasilevskiy, assisted by Bennett and Bryan Rust. Derrick Pouliot gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal to open the third period, assisted by Bennett and Ebbett.

The Pens doubled their lead with a power-play goal from Megna, his second goal of the game. Megna converted on an odd man rush at the 5:04 mark of the third period. Bennett had the primary assist on the play, his fourth of the night, Brian Dumoulin picked up the secondary assist.

Syracuse forced overtime with Richard and Smith each netting their second goal of the game in the third period. Richard had a centering pass deflected past Hartzell at the 12:07 mark of the third to bring the Crunch within one of the Penguins. Dalton Smith tied the game with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, a power-play goal, with 2:19 to go in regulation.

The Crunch next travel to division rival Albany on Wednesday, Nov. 12 for a 7 p.m. contest against the Devils.
