Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch ended their home season with a shootout loss, 5-4, against the Adirondack Phantoms tonight at the War Memorial.
Phantoms center Ben Holmstrom scored in the ninth round of the shootout to lift the Phantoms over the Crunch and drop the Crunch's overall record to 30-31-4-9. Syracuse wins the season series with the Phantoms, 4-1-0-1.
Crunch netminder Cedrick Desjardins stopped 22 of 26 shots on goal and four of nine shootout attempts while his Phantom counterpart Tony Capobianco entered the game in relief of Carsen Chubak and stopped 24 of 27 shots and five of nine shootout attempts.
Syracuse failed to convert on five man advantages while the Phantoms scored once on four power-play opportunities.
Joel Vermin opened the scoring at the 6:27 mark of the first frame with an unassisted goal from the top of the left circle. Vermin picked up a stray Adirondack pass to notch his first AHL goal. The Phantoms responded when Rob Bordson slid the puck across the crease, past Desjardins' right side two minutes later. Assists went to Tyler Brown and Robert Hagg. The Phantoms went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead after Holmstrom scored with 13 seconds to play on the rebound of Oliver Lauridsen's shot from the left side. Phantoms netminder Chubak stopped 13 of 14 shots before Capobianco came in at the start of the second.
Adam Erne evened the scoring 3:25 into the second period. Erne took a pass from Evan Rankin and backhanded the puck past Capobianco's left side. The Phantoms took the lead when Tom Serratore tipped in a Kevin Goumas pass to Desjardins' stick side at the 7:16 mark. Mark Alt picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Brett Connolly poked the puck in on Capobianco's glove side after a scramble in front of the net to tie up the game with 11:40 left in the final frame. Jonathan Marchessault and Erne got the helpers on the goal. A minute later, Rankin picked up his own rebound and stuffed it between the post and Capobianco's right side. Mike Angelidis and J.P. Cote had the assists. Hagg converted on a Phantoms power play at the 13:05 mark with a shot from the right circle, which deflected past Desjardins off the leg of Crunch defenseman Joey Mormina, forcing the two teams into overtime.
After a scoreless overtime and nine-round shootout, Nick Cousins, Bordson, Marcel Noebels, Derek Whitmore, and Holmstrom scored for the Phantoms. Rankin, Connolly, Tanner Richard and Vlad Namestnikov scored for the Crunch.
