Devils Down Pirates in Shootout in Final Colisee Game

April 16, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME- In their final game at the Androscoggin Bank in Lewiston, the Portland Pirates dropped a 3-2 shootout decision at the hands of the Albany Devils. Greg Carey scored his first professional goal and Lucas Lessio also scored for the Pirates while Mark Visentin, back from his stint in Phoenix, made 28 saves.

The first period saw a lot of back and forth action, with both teams playing a majority of the period in the neutral zone. In the second, the goals started to come as the Pirates quickly took a 1-0, striking 23 seconds in when Greg Carey notched his first professional goal. Tyler Kennedy swooped into the Albany zone before slamming on the brakes along the right wing boards. After battling with the puck, he flipped a wrister on net that Carey knocked out of midair and redirected around Keith Kincaid for the night's first goal. Albany would answer minutes later when Reid Boucher buried his 22nd of the year, shooting a well-placed shot to Visentin's blocker side and in at 6:03. The Devils threatened more throughout the period, finally beating Visentin again when Dan Kelly loosed a slap shot through screens to make it 2-1 Albany at 17:02.

In the third, the Pirates would tie the game up on the power play with Lessio scoring his 29th goal of the year. Brandon Gormley received a pass near the blue line, skated down the right wing boards and dished the puck into the middle. Lessio, standing in the low slow, redirected the puck, beating Kincaid five-hole at 7:19.

The game headed into overtime where both teams had some chances. Visentin made a couple of saves early on and Andy Miele and James Melindy nearly connected just before time expired, but Miele's saucer pass was a bit off the mark. In the shootout, Jordan Szwarz scored, but Stefan Matteau and Mike Sislo each beat Visentin, giving the Devils the win and clinching a Calder Cup Playoff berth for Albany.
