Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

The Williamsport Crosscutters beat the Pinckney Division leading Mahoning Valley Scrappers 6-1 on Saturday night at Bowman Field. With the win the Cutters have won back-to-back games for the first time this season to move their record to 5-4.

Williamsport fell behind early 1-0 in the 2nd when Scrappers CF Jordan Henry singled on a ground ball to right field scoring LF Greg Folgia who had doubled in his at-bat. Cutters starter Nick Hernandez (0-0) would settle down after the run was scored going 4 innings, yielding 6 hits, 1 earned run and striking out one.

The Cutters rallied for four runs in the bottom of the 2nd when 2B Adam Buschini struck out but was able to advance to first when the ball squirted away from the Scrappers catcher. The Cutters then loaded the bases when both DH Francisco Murillo and 1B Stephen Batts walked.

The Cutters who have been struggling to get the big hit with runners in scoring position turned the tide when OF T.J. Warren singled on a ground ball to left field plating Buschini and the Cutters first run of the inning. Alan Schoenberger in his first game as a Crosscutter grounded to second baseman Lurvin Basabe, who threw the ball into left field wasting a potential inning ending double play. Murillo and Batts scored on the error giving the Cutters a 3-1 lead. CF Jiwan James then singled home Warren to plate the fourth and final run of the inning.

The Cutters were out-hit on the evening 8-6 but were able to take advantage of three Scrappers errors to complete the victory.

RHP Luke Wertz (1-0) won his first game of the year pitching three innings of relief allowing just two hits striking out one.

Sunday night the Cutters will go for their third straight victory as they welcome the visiting Batavia MuckDogs to Historic Bowman Field for the opening game of a three game series starting at 5:05. The game can be heard on ESPN 1050 AM or ESPN 104.1 FM.
