Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

Williamsport defeated the Pinckney Division champion Mahoning Valley Scrappers 9-4 on Tuesday evening at Historic Bowman Field.

The Scrappers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mahoning Valley put the first two batters of the game on base however, Cutters starting RHP Joshua Zeid (7-5, 2.65) was able to work his way out of any serious damage.

The lead was short-lived though when the Crosscutters equaled the Scrappers scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. With one out 3B Alan Schoenberger singled and moved to second on C Sebastian Valle's two-out single. 1B Darin Ruf provided the big blow as he hit a two-run double off the top of the left centerfield wall.

Williamsport took the lead for good in the bottom of the second as the Cutters plated three runs to take a 5-2 lead. With one out 2B Evan Porter and SS Jonathan Villar hit back-to-back singles. With two outs, Schoenberger hit a double to left plating Porter with the go-ahead run. CF Leandro Castro followed with a two-bagger scoring both Villar and Schoenberger.

Mahoning Valley scrapped back for single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to cut the lead to 5-4.

Williamsport added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th and then three more runs in the bottom of the 8th to give them a 9-4 cushion heading into the top of the 9th. Porter highlighted the 8th inning with a two run double.

Pitcher Joshua Zeid picked up his 7th win of the season, going 5 innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out five.

LF Zach Collier, Porter and Ruf all had two hits and two runs batted in for the Cutters.

Williamsport will host the State College Spikes on Wednesday evening at 7:05 in the first of a three game series. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1050AM, 104.1FM or online at crosscutters.com.
