Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Staten Island Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Lake Monsters and won their 11th straight game overall with a 5-1 victory over Vermont on Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.

For the third straight night the Yankees put runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Staten Island got two unearned runs in the first on Tuesday on a two-run double from Zoilo Almonte off of Vermont starter Kyle Morrison.

Luke Murton gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning before Staten Island tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth off of reliever Johan Figuereo. Francisco Santana led off the inning with a double and scored on a Justin Milo one-out RBI single. Milo, a former University of Vermont baseball and current UVM hockey player, then scored on a DeAngelo Mack RBI triple for a 5-0 lead.

After just one hit off Staten Island starter Matt Richardson over the first four innings, the Lake Monsters scored their only run of the game on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Sandy Leon and Jack Walker had back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning and J.J. Sferra knocked home Leon with a two-out RBI single.

A walk to Francisco Soriano loaded the bases for Vermont and spelled the end of the night for Richardson, who allowed one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Ronny Marte (6-3) struckout Justin Bloxom to end the fifth inning and had two more strikeouts in a scoreless sixth to earn the victory for Staten Island (43-27).

Morrison (2-4) gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits over four innings for the loss as the Lake Monsters offense was held to just four hits on the night and none after the Sferra RBI single in the fifth. Vermont reliever Jose Pinales had three strikeouts in two scoreless innings on his 24th birthday.

Vermont (31-38) continues the homestand on Wednesday as the Lake Monsters host the Tri-City ValleyCats. The teams will resume a suspended seven-inning game from August 23rd at Tri-City in the top of the third inning with Vermont leading 3-0 at 6:05 on Wednesday. They will then play the regularly-schedule game, a seven-inning contest, about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
