Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Thursday, January 29) - Columbus Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith and Head Coach Greg Andrulis announced today that John Murphy has been hired as an assistant coach. Murphy joins fellow Crew assistant Robert Warzycha on the Columbus coaching staff.

" I came here for one reason only, and that is to help this organization win a championship, " said Murphy. " I have lived in Boston my whole life and I wouldn ' t have made this commitment if I didn ' t think we could accomplish some great things here. "

Murphy spent the last four years on the coaching staff of the New England Revolution. His focus in New England was with the Revolution goalkeepers while also being the Director of Youth Soccer Development. While in New England, Murphy helped develop Adin Brown into one of MLS ' top goalkeepers.

The Quincy, Mass., native will oversee The Crew ' s goalkeepers, but will also be involved in every other aspect of running the team as an assistant coach.

" We are very excited to have John as a part of our coaching staff, " said Andrulis. " His expertise is goalkeeping, but he is also very good at every aspect of coaching and scouting. He will be a very valuable addition to the organization. "

The 35-year-old Murphy is also very well versed in the college game and has been a head coach at Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.) and at Massasoit Community College (Brockton, Mass.), as well as an assistant coach at Brown University (Providence, R.I.).

" I remember the first-ever game played here at Crew Stadium and being envious of this great soccer environment, " said Murphy. " And to be here today and to step through the stadium, it means a lot. I ' ve admired the organization from afar and I am excited to be working side-by-side with Jim, Greg and Robert. The organization is committed to winning and with the moves the team has made this offseason it could be a great year. I am looking forward to getting it back to the way it used to be, and that is making Crew Stadium the toughest place to play in the league. "

Murphy is the author of, " Full Season Goalkeeper Training Program " published by World Class Coaching in December 2003, and has authored articles that have appeared in the Bay Stater, Soccer New England and Performance and Conditioning Inc.

He holds a U.S. Soccer " A " License, an " A " Intro License from the Scottish Football Association, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and an English Football Association " A " Goalkeeper Coaching License (final assessment pending). Murphy is also a nationally recognized clinician, and as an NSCAA Staff Goalkeeper Coach lectures at coaching conventions and clinics throughout the U.S.

Murphy and his wife, Erin, have a 14-month old son, Shay.
