SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads dropped the opener of a four-game series, 4-1, against the Delmarva Shorebirds before 2,268 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Delmarva (4-2) got out to the game's first lead with a tally against LHP Martin Perez (2-5) in the bottom of the first inning. LF Kyle Hudson reached first on an infield single and then scored from first base on a double hit by 1B Elvin Polanco to the right-center field gap, making it 1-0.

Perez kept the Shorebirds at one run on the board through the next three innings, before the Crawdads (2-3) bats tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth. DH Jason Ogata was hit by a pitch from LHP Chris Salburg (1-0) to start the frame and moved to second on a ground out before taking third on a wild pitch. With only one out, C Leonel De Los Santos brought Ogata in from third on a line drive hit to right field for the sacrifice fly to tie the game.

However, Delmarva responded with a go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly of their own against Perez in the bottom of the fifth and then plated two against RHP Fabio Castillo in the sixth to account for the 4-1 final.

RHP Mark Hamburger kept it a three-run game with a scoreless eighth, but RHP Shane Matthews and RHP Cliff Flagello combined to keep the Crawdads bats in check the rest of the way, completing the 4-1 victory for Delmarva. Perez was tagged with the loss, while Salburg earned the win and Flagello registered the save for Delmarva.
