Hickory Crawdads News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads claimed a 5-3 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds, before 1,378 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night.
Delmarva (29-25) came out swinging right away, as CF Mikey Planeta led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field. Hickory RHP Nick Tepesch (W, 1-3) retired the next three in a row, but Planeta was able to come in on an RBI grounder by 3B Ty Kelly to put the Shorebirds ahead, 1-0.
The Crawdads (28-25) came right back in the top of the third, plating a pair on five singles and an error. 1B Jhonny Gomez led off with a walk, before DH Alejandro Selen placed a single to right field. RF Brenden Webb tried to throw Gomez out at third on the play, but fired wide of third base, allowing Gomez to score and Selen to reach third on the play. LF Jonathan Roof then drove a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Selen to put Hickory in the 2-1 lead.
The Shorebirds were kept off the board by Tepesch in the third and fourth, but they tied it in the fifth inning. C Justin Dalles was hit by a pitch to start the frame and advanced to third on a single by 2B Mychal Givens. Dalles then charged home on a fielder's choice hit into by Webb, tying it at 2-2.
Hickory moved right back in front with three runs against LHP Jacob Pettit (L, 5-1) and RHP Randy Kelly in the top of the seventh. RF Josh Richmond sparked the rally with a double to start the frame, followed by an infield single by CF Jake Skole. A sacrifice bunt advanced both to second and third, and a walk by DH Alejandro Selen loaded the bases with one out. Roof knocked in Richmond from third with a fielder's choice, leaving runners at the corners for SS Jurickson Profar, who followed with a two-run triple to right field, swinging the 'Dads ahead, 5-2.
Delmarva chipped away at the deficit with a tally in the bottom of the eighth. SS Jonathan Schoop led off with a walk, then moved all the way to third when RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 6) fired a pick off attempt wide of first base. Rodebaugh retired the next three, but Schoop came in on an RBI grounder by LF Kieron Pope, cutting the Crawdads lead to 5-3.
Rodebaugh came back out in the bottom of the ninth and slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning, closing the 5-3 victory for the Crawdads.
