Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HICKORY, N.C. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds stumbled in a crucial road trip, losing 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Hickory. Delmarva (22-24) could not end their six-game losing streak, as the first-place Crawdads completed the sweep at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Shorebirds have suffered numerous injuries over the last few weeks, but the toll has worsened in the last two days. After three players made early exits on Tuesday, Shorebirds' starter Bennett Parry pitched only two innings before another early departure on Wednesday.
Hickory scored first in the third inning as reliever Stefan Crichton entered early for Delmarva. After a leadoff single set up the opportunity, Luke Tendler opened the scoring with an RBI double.
The Crawdads extended their lead in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of walks. With two outs and two on, Kevin Torres flared a single off Matt Trowbridge, putting Hickory up 3-0.
Delmarva threatened for a big rally in the seventh, but a crucial double play halted the comeback. Logan Uxa led off the inning with a solo home run, his first as a Shorebird. After a double by Tanner Murphy, the Crawdads bullpen walked three straight batters to force in another run. Conor Bierfeldt picked up his 45th RBI with his bases loaded walk to make it 3-2. However, Jomar Reyes bounced into a double play to end the inning and cut the comeback short.
An error hepled Hickory add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Michael De Leon reached on a throwing error, and later scored on a two-out single by Eduard Pinto.
Yohander Mendez locked up the save, clinching the 4-2 victory with two hitless innings in relief. Kelvin Vasquez got the win for Hickory, while Crichton settled for the loss for Delmarva. The Shorebirds have now lost six games in a row, their longest streak of the season.
Delmarva returns home to Perdue Stadium for a four-game series against the West Virginia Power. Shorebirds left-hander John Means (2-2, 4.82) heads to the hill against Power right-hander Austin Coley (6-2, 2.89). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Thursday evening in Salisbury, Md.
