Meisner Spins Seven in 7-2 Win Wednesday

Savannah, GA - Behind a strong pitching performance from Casey Meisner, the Savannah Sand Gnats cruised past the Asheville Tourists 7-2 Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. By taking two-of-three from the Tourists, the Gnats have now won three straight series.

The Gnats (21-25) scored three times in the bottom of the third to begin the evening's scoring. Second baseman JC Rodriguez singled home DH Jonathan Johnson for the first run. Later, right fielder Wuilmer Becerra doubled to the left field wall to bring home Eudor Garcia from first with the third Savannah run of the night.

The Tourists (19-27) picked up a run in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Shane Hoelscher, his second of the year. The homer was the first hit that Meisner allow.

The Savannah starter finished the seventh inning for the third time in his last four starts to earn his fourth win of 2015. He struck out five and walked two.

Garcia brought home two more runs in the fifth on a bases loaded single to right field to give the Gnats a 5-1 lead.

After the Tourists inched closer with a run in the top of the sixth, Rodriguez blasted a homer to right in the seventh to give the Gnats a four-run cushion at 6-2. Rodriguez finished 3-for-3 with a walk, a homer, two runs scored and two RBI. Johnson also reached based four times from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk two runs scored and an RBI.

LHP Paul Paez tossed two shutout-innings in relief of Meisner allowing just one hit.

The Sand Gnats will take on the Charleston RiverDogs Thursday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will start RHP Ricky Knapp (0-0, 1.80), while the RiverDogs will send RHP Joey Maher (1-3, 3.76) to the hill. Tomorrow will be Budweiser Thirsty Thursday with half-priced regular sodas and draft beers all night long brought to you by Budweiser, E-93, Connect Savannah, and I-95. Gates will open at 6 PM and first pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
