Suns Take Two of Three in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC - The Hagerstown Suns (24-22) could not complete their second series sweep of the Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-27) on Wednesday afternoon, falling in the final game of a three-game series 8-5. Despite the loss Hagerstown finished its seven-game road trip with a 4-3 record, making it back-to-back road trips with winning records.

The Suns got out to a 3-1 lead on Wednesday after two innings, but the Grasshopper bats then came to life as Greensboro plated at least one run in four of the next six innings. The Grasshoppers out-hit the Suns in the game 15-12, and three of those 15 hits were homers. Two of those three homeruns came against starting RHP Luis Reyes, who exited the game after five innings, having allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four. LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-2) took over for Reyes and wound up suffering the loss. He let up three earned runs on four hits in just one inning of work. LHP James Buckelew (3-0) got the win for Greensboro. He threw 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk. RHP Josh Hodges threw the final two innings for the Grasshoppers to record his fourth save of the season.

In game two of the series on Tuesday night the Suns ensured themselves of the series win thanks to a 10-3 victory. This time it was the Suns who used the long ball to their advantage, smacking three of them to drive in four of their runs. Two of the homers came off the bat of CF Dale Carey, giving him five for the season. RHP Andrew Cooper (1-2) threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. RHP Tyler Kane (0-1) gave up four earned runs on three hits and one walk without recording an out as he suffered the loss for Greensboro. RHP Drew Van Orden picked up his second save of the year by tossing the final four innings for the Suns without allowing a run.

In the first game of the series on Monday night Hagerstown broke a 2-2 tie with a run each in the seventh and eighth innings to dispatch the Grasshoppers by a final of 4-2. Designated hitter Brennan Middleton drove in what wound up being the winning run with a line drive single to left with a runner at third and one out in the seventh. In the eighth the Suns added their insurance run thanks to an RBI single off the bat of 1B Grant DeBruin.

Starting RHP Austen Williams (6-1) tossed six innings on Monday to pick up his team-leading sixth win of the year. He surrendered both Greensboro runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. RHP Mario Sanchez threw the final three innings for Hagerstown to record his second save of the season. RHP Luis Castillo (1-2) suffered the loss for the Grashoppers. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four over 3.1 innings of work.

In total Hagerstown outscored Greensboro 19-13 in the series, but the Grasshoppers outhit the Suns 35-29. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to take on the Kannapolis Intimidators (21-24) in a four-game series beginning on Thursday, May 28. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05pm.
