Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Bridgeport, CT - Bridgeport starter Brad Furnish struck out 11 Southern Maryland batters over seven innings of work as the Bluefish salvaged one game of a three-game series with the Blue Crabs by a 1-0 score on Thursday at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT.
The lone run of the game came in the first inning as centerfielder Adam Greenberg led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, then stole third before scoring on a groundout by Luis Lopez to give the Bluefish the 1-0 lead.
As for the Blue Crabs, they had three tremendous opportunities to score in the game. In the first, they had a third baseman Brandon Pinckney at second with two out when leftfielder Brian Barton singled. Pinckney came charging around third but was held up at the last moment by third base coach and manager Patrick Osborn. The next hitter, catcher Christian Lopez, then struck out to end the threat.
Opportunity number two came in the fourth inning as Barton stole second base with two out to put the tying run a second base. But Furnish was able to strike out right fielder Ben Harrison to end the inning.
The Blue Crabs' final chance came in the ninth as they were able to put runners at first and second with only one out. Closer Juan Rincon struck out Barton for out number two, before uncorking a wild pitch to send the runners to second and third. However, Rincon got Lopez to ground out on a check swing to the mound to end the game.
There were only eight hits in the contest (all singles) with Southern Maryland garnering five of them. Shortstop Yunesky Sanchez had two hits, while no one had more than one base knock for the Bluefish. Bridgeport managed only 12 hits for the three-game series, three of which were for extra bases.
The win went to Furnish (2-1) who allowed no walks and three hits in the contest. The tough-luck loser was Southern Maryland starter Brian Slocum (3-3) who was sensational. He allowed only the one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out four in seven frames.
The 5-9 hitters in the Blue Crabs lineup went a combined 0-16 with 10 strikeouts. The Blue Crabs fanned 13 times against three Bluefish hurlers.
The Blue Crabs head home to open a six-game home stand and three-game series on Friday against the Road Warriors at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Eddie Rodriguez (1-1, 2.20 ERA) to the hill against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
