Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - June 30, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (26-27) snapped a five game losing streak behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Furnish. Bridgeport defeated Southern Maryland (30-24) by a score of 1-0 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday night. With the victory, the Bluefish earned their first shutout of 2011.
Furnish (2-1) tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out eleven in picking up his first victory as a starter. Antonio Alfonseca pitched a scoreless eighth. Juan Rincon did not allow a run in the ninth even though the go-ahead run was in scoring position. Rincon notched his seventh save of the year and his first since June 17.
Brian Slocum (3-3) allowed one run in seven innings, but took the loss for the road squad. Jason Waddell pitched a scoreless eighth for the Blue Crabs
The home team scored the only run of the night in the first inning. Adam Greenberg singled and advanced to second on a ground ball to second. After the Bluefish leadoff hitter stole third, Greenberg scored on a ground out to the shortstop.
Bridgeport starts a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The gates open one hour prior to first pitch. Friday Night is Beach Bag giveaway presented by Promagination. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a bag.
