Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and official electricity partner CPL are combining forces to bring the sport of hockey to the streets of the Rio Grande Valley as part of the CPL Retail Energy Street Hockey Challenge with the RGV Killer Bees. And lucky fans have less than a week to enter to win.

In its first season as a supporter of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, CPL is offering fans a chance to win bragging rights over their favorite Killer Bees players and their very own Bubble Hockey Machine valued at $3,000. As part of the Challenge, the winner's team - made up of to 20 friends and family members - will hit the pavement and go head-to-head with the Killer Bees players, who'll be sharing their passion for the game of hockey with the fans who cheer them on throughout the season.

"It will be a lot of fun getting to play a game of street hockey against one lucky fan and their friends," Killer Bees forward Zak McClellan said. "No pressure, no worrying about winning or losing - just having a great time playing the game we all love."

The Street Hockey Challenge with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees includes a jam-packed afternoon following the Killer Bees' post-season action for the winner, friends, family and entire street with top players arriving right to the winner's doorstep with invitations to 20 guests, entertainment and food all courtesy of CPL. The lucky name will be drawn during the last game of the season, Saturday, March 20.

Think you have what it takes to stare McClellan and team in the face and battle it out? Street Hockey Challenge raffle tickets are $1 each and may be purchased at any RGV Killer Bees game. Purchasing a ticket offers fans not only a chance to win but also an opportunity to give back to Valley residents as proceeds from the raffle are going to support CPL's electricity bill-payment assistance program, Neighbor-to-Neighbor.

"Being active and visible in the community is something our employees and customers have told us they value," said Jim Steffes, vice president and general manager for CPL Retail Energy. "Just as importantly, it's something our company culture values and embraces as the way we want to do business here in the Valley. The Street Hockey Challenge gives CPL an opportunity to leverage a great relationship we've built with the Killer Bees to bring awareness to the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program while bringing the fun of hockey directly into the community, and hopefully help foster a love of the game with new young fans."

Year-round assistance is available to CPL customers who demonstrate financial need through Neighbor-to-Neighbor, which provides up to $600 in electricity bill-payment assistance in a calendar year, and is managed through local community action agencies.

"The Killer Bees know it's important to take an active role in community efforts such as the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program," Killer Bees General Manager Grant W. Buckborough said. "Our organization spends hundreds of hours supporting community events throughout the year. CPL has been a tremendous partner of ours this season and we're excited to help raise money and spread awareness of such a worthwhile charity."
