Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
Edinburg, TX; July 29, 2007-Things are starting to look up for the Edinburg Coyotes as they nabbed both games in the doubleheader match-up with the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. In the first game Coyotes pitcher Angel Rocha showed he has finally found his stride as he and the rest of the Coyotes shut out the Whitewings 3-0 in seven. In the second game, the Coyotes came from behind in the seventh to tie things up taking it into extra innings where Alexis Hernandez notched a two run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to capture the win for Edinburg.
Edinburg started things off early in the first game scoring two runs in the first when shortstop Nelson Teilon hit his 18th homerun on the season, a two run shot over the center field wall. Teilon is now tied for first with Rio's Ryan Fox for most homeruns in United League Baseball. They would go on to score one more run in the contest on an Amado German homerun in the fifth giving them the shut out win 3-0. Rocha, who picked up his first win on the season, tonight gave up no runs, one hit, while walking five and striking out nine in his five innings of work.
To start the second game of the double header things weren't looking good for Edinburg and starting pitcher Bryan Heaston as he allowed Rio four runs in the first inning alone. It all started with Heaston walking Bub Bergstrom and Omar Bramasco, followed by a Miguel Piguero single. Heaston then walked Ryan Fox which scored one, followed by a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Martinez which scored another. To finish off scoring in the inning Brian Nichols singled which scored two more. Rio would go on to score two more in the contest giving them six all together.
Edinburg didn't fall down easy, notching two runs in the second, two in the sixth and one in the seventh that would tie things up between the two taking the game into extra innings. The Whitewings were able to score one in the eighth giving them the advantage going into the bottom of the inning, but it was Edinburg's Alexis Hernandez battling out of his slump and hitting the game winning, walk-off two run homerun that would capture the win for the Coyotes 7-6.
The WhiteWings and Coyotes will play a doubleheader (two seven inning games) tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. Kenny Evoniuk (1-2) and Joey Cress (3-6) will face Eric Montoya (5-2) and Aaron Guerra (7-3)
