Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Edinburg, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (38-36, 9-15) handed the ball to Derek Bennett (3-2) to protect a one-run lead in both the seventh and the eighth innings, but the Edinburg Coyotes (34-40, 8-16) scored both times, including a walk-off two-run home run by Alexis Hernandez in the eighth, to win 7-6 in game two of tonight's doubleheader (two seven inning games) at Edinburg Stadium, sweeping the twin bill.

The WhiteWings got on the board right away as Bub Bergstrom and Omar Bramasco led off with walks against Bryan Heaston. Miguel Peguero followed with a single and Ryan Fox walked to force in a run. One batter later, Alejandro Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to advance every runner. Brian Nichols capped the inning with a two-run single, making it 4-0.

The Coyotes responded with two runs in the second as Nelson Teilon led off with a walk against Joe Rogers. Eric Allen was hit by a pitch. One out later, Luis Espinosa hit a deep fly ball to right center field for Ryan Fox, who made the catch. Teilon tagged from second and didn't stop at third, heading home. The relay throw wasn't in time as Allen moved to second base on the throw. Adam Bonner followed with an RBI-single to make it 4-2.

In the top of the fourth with two outs, Nichols singled and Teodoro Encarnacion doubled. Kevin Griffin drew a seven-pitch walk to set up the second bases loaded walk of the ball game, this one by Bergstrom, to knock out Heaston and make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Eric Gonzalez led off with a double. Two outs later, Teilon hit an RBI-single and Allen hit an RBI-double to make it 5-4.

Bennett picked up his second blown save of the season and allowed his first earned runs in the seventh as Espinosa led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Amado German got a pinch-hit RBI-single one batter later to tie the game 5-5 and send it into extras.

The WhiteWings rallied back in the eighth without the benefit of a hit against Andy Noonan and Adam Clay (4-1). Martinez drew a leadoff walk and Ericnardo Padilla pinch-rain. He stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Clay came in to face John Beal, who put down a suicide squeeze to give the WhiteWings a 6-5 lead.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes will play a doubleheader (two seven inning games) tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. Kenny Evoniuk (1-2) and Joey Cress (3-6) will face Eric Montoya (5-2) and Aaron Guerra (7-3).
