Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
Edinburg, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes will have much needed momentum heading into an important series with Laredo after sweeping the Alexandria Aces 8-1 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Coyotes will have a steady two-game lead for the fourth and final playoff spot when they host the Broncos Friday night.
It was obvious that the Aces (47-31) struggled throughout their three-game series without their skipper Ricky Vanasselberg. The Aces' manager was suspended before the start of the series and the Coyotes (37-40) took full advantage of Vanasselberg's absence as they captured their first sweep against the two-time defending ULB champions this season.
Coyotes' starting pitcher Miguel Martinez turned in a solid performance as pitched a complete game allowing only one run on eight hits while striking out seven. Brandon McConnell led the Coyotes offensively as he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Coyotes put away the Aces early after they sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs off of five hits. After Alex Entrekin was hit by a pitch, Gary Roche got things rolling early in the inning after he doubled to left field advancing ntrekin over to third. Argelis Nunez then hit an infield single advancing Roche to third and scoring Entrekin for a 1-0 lead. Roche then scored on a pass ball. Eric Gonzalez then walked and Mayobanex Santana grounded out to third advancing Gonzalez over to second and Nunez to third. Coyotes' left fielder Brandon McConnell crushed one to left field for an two-run RBI double giving the Coyotes a 4-0 lead. The next batter, Robert Matlock then hit an RBI single to right field that brought in McConnell for a 5-0 lead. Coyotes added another run in the second after Gonzalez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field bringing in Nunez from third giving the Coyotes a comfortable six run lead. Aces put up their only run in the game in the top of the third when Selwyn Langaigne doubled to left field bringing in Bryan Sabatella from second.
Coyotes went on to score a run in the fourth and seventh innings and ended the night with 13 hits.
NOTE: Coyotes begin a three-game series with the Laredo Broncos tomorrow night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05. Coyotes and Broncos are in tight playoff race for the fourth and final playoff spot. The "Mad Scientist" Aaron Guerra is expected to take the mound.
