San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Charley Belew had been having a tough go of it at the plate of late, coming into Thursday's game with two hits in his last 26 at bats. He was 0-for-3 in this game when he came to the plate with two out and two on in the bottom of the seventh of a 5-5 game. Facing Harlingen righty reliever Bobby Darling, the Colts shortstop swung at the first pitch and lined a one-hopper just past the shortstop Amadeo Zazueta, bringing home Bryan Frichter with the eventual winning run. The Colts got some insurance runs in the eighth and beat the WhiteWings 9-5 in front of 2,217 fans at Foster Field.

San Angelo (48-28) won two of three from Harlingen (20-57) in the penultimate regular season series at Foster Field, but this one was not easy. The 'Wings touched Brian Henschel (10-3) early, with solo home runs from David Fowler and Ryan Fox in the first. But the Colts came back with a run in the bottom half on an RBI single from Aaron Cone off starter Miguel Sosa.

The Colts then took the lead in the third, getting a run on an RBI single by Andres Rodriguez and then another on a bizarre play. With Rodriguez at second and Jose Torres on third, Cone walked. But on ball four, Rodriguez strayed off of the bag, and catcher Carl Johnson threw down to try to pick him off but threw high, and the error allowed Torres to score.

After San Angelo got two more in the fifth on another RBI single by Rodriguez and a wild pitch, Johnson redeemed himself in the seventh. With two outs, Joel Gonzalez drew a walk of Henschel and Johnson went deep over the clubhouse in left, his second homer of the season and second in as many nights, tying the game at 5-5.

Sosa lasted four batters into the sixth, then gave way to Darling (1-6), who got Rodriguez to ground back to him on a 3-0 pitch with two outs and two on. Darling then got the first two outs of the seventh, but walked Bryan Frichter and Wyn Diggs before Belew's heroics.

Robert Romero picked up his second save of the series, going the final two innings after Henschel went seven, giving up five runs (four earned), on six hits while walking one and striking out seven. Romero allowed a one-out double to Zazueta in the eighth, who then advanced to third on a wild pitch. But Romero struck out Ryan Fox looking and got David Cardona to fly out to end the frame. He also allowed a leadoff walk in the ninth but got the next three for the save.

Notes: Tyrone Pendergrass was 5-for-5 with five singles, including three bunts, his first five-hit game of the season...Henschel tied teammate Logan Williamson and Amarillo's Micah Posey for the league lead with his 10th win, although Henschel's have all come in his last 11 starts...The Colts stranded 13 runners tonight after they left 14 on base last night, but this time San Angelo was 7-for-19 with men on base compared to 5-for-25 in the 9-4 loss last night.

The Colts now head out on the road for six games in seven days at Alexandria and Harlingen, with the first pitch Friday night from Bringhurst Field at 7:05 p.m. San Angelo returns for the final home series of the regular season on Friday, August 15, with a Back-to-School Kit Giveaway, sponsored by 211 Texas at the 7:05 p.m. game against Edinburg.
