
Coyotes Lose Opener

AMARILLO, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes dropped the opener of the series with a 14-6 loss to the Amarillo Dillas Saturday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. The loss keeps the Coyotes one game behind the Laredo Broncos as they lost to the San Angelo Colts Saturday night.
Miguel Martinez (6-4) struggled as he got the loss after giving up 13 runs on 13 hits in four innings of work.
The Coyotes (33-40) got off to a good start but could only manage one run in the top of the first inning. Angelo Fermin worked a walk and then Alex Entrekin hit a double down the third base line which put runners on second and third with no one out. Daryl Jones then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Fermin from third base which gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.
But for the second straight game the Coyotes' pitching staff gave up the lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Danny Bravo hit a three run home run that quickly gave the lead for the Dillas. After three straight walks, Sam Mclain hit a grand slam to extend the Dillas' lead to 7-1.
The Dillas (42-32) added to their lead in the second inning after Andrew Wong hit a two run double that scored Bravo and A.J. Johnson to make the score 9-1.
The Coyotes added a run in the top of the third inning after Robert Matlock scored from third on a ground out by Argelis Nunez which made the score 9-2.
The Dillas then scored two runs in the in the bottom of the third with a Keith Brachold two-run home run which extended the Dillas lead to 11-2. Then in the bottom of the fourth they added two more runs on an RBI triple by Wong and then an RBI single by Justin Wenger that scored Wong from third and made the score 13-2.
The Coyotes added four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nunez started the inning with a double then Eric Gonzalez followed with a single to left that put runners on the corners for Mayobanex Santana. He then hit a single to right center field that scored Nunez from third base. With runners on the corners , again, Amado German hit an RBI fielder's choice that scored Gonzalez from third which made the score 13-4. Then with runners on first and second base, Matlock then hit a two run double that scored German and Brandon McConnell that made the score 13-6.
The Colts picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Josh Ashton started the inning with a double, Brachold followed with a single which put runners on the corners. Then Gary Schneidmiller hit an RBI groundout to third that scored Ashton which extended the lead to 14-6.
The Coyotes and Dillas will continue their three game series with game two on Sunday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Aaron Guerra (9-1) will try to put an end to the two game losing streak for the Coyotes as he will match up against Marcos Castillo (7-6).
