San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - San Angelo Colts starter Brian Henschel (9-3) pitched all eight of his innings on Saturday night with the lead and never let it go, as the righty shut down the Laredo Broncos, leading the Colts to a 4-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series. San Angelo is now 12-4 against Laredo this year and a win either Sunday or Monday will give the Colts their sixth series victory in six series versus the Broncos this season.
Henschel, who has now won nine of his last 10 starts, was provided a 2-0 lead before he even took the mound. Bryan Frichter started the game with a single against Broncos starter Sean Donlin (2-5), who remained winless in the last month despite a good outing. Donlin had Frichter picked off but after Donlin threw to first, Matt Imwalle didn't bother making a throw to second as Frichter was already sliding into second base. Tyrone Pendergrass then dropped down a nice bunt in between home and the mound, which Donlin fielded and threw away past first. Frichter scored on the throwing error and Pendergrass, who was credited with a single, went all the way to third on the play. He then scored a batter later when Andres Rodriguez doubled into right-center, picking up his league-leading 85th RBI of the year.
Laredo scored its only run of the night in the second on three straight two-out singles by Arnoldo Ponce, Josue Gonzalez, and Ben Tinius. But that was as close as the Broncos came, as Henschel allowed just three hits and four baserunners over the next six innings. Overall, Henschel allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Donlin settled down and gave up just two hits after Rodriguez' RBI double in the first. The lefty surrendered two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks, losing against the Colts for the second time in his last three outings.
The Colts hit into four double plays on the night, but the biggest double play of the game was started by Henschel in the seventh. After Gonzalez led off the frame with a single, Ben Tinius tried to bunt Gonzalez up to second. However, Henschel fielded the bunt immediately, made a strong throw to second, and shortstop Charley Belew quickly got rid of the ball to first, completing the 1-6-3 DP.
San Angelo picked up two big insurance runs, one in the eighth and one in the ninth, off former Major Leaguer Mickey Callaway. Frichter walked to begin the eighth and went to third on a pinch-hit single by John Anderson. Jose Torres then hit into a double play, bringing home Frichter to make it 3-1. In the ninth, Jason Landreth doubled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Albert Gonzalez, who scored on an RBI single by Joe Rhomberg, putting the Colts ahead 4-1.
Right-hander Luke Massetti picked up his first save in his second opportunity as the new closer with a scoreless bottom of the ninth. A two-out single and an error did bring the tying run to the plate but Tinius bounced into a fielder's choice to end the game.
The Colts continue this three-game series in Laredo with game two at 7:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, August 3.
