Coyotes Flex Their Muscles, 12-5

SAN ANGELO, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes (12-18) opened the three game series with the San Angelo Colts (16-15) with a 12-5 victory at Foster Field on Saturday night. The offense continued what it started as they left home for a six game road trip.

Miguel Martinez got the win (4-1) after he went five innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits. The Coyotes got their revenge on Luke Massetti handing him his first loss of the season after he allowed six runs on 13 hits.

The Coyotes struck early in the first inning as Angelo Fermin started the inning with a single to right field and then Gary Roche followed with a single of his own. With runners at first and third, Mayobanex Santana hit into a double play that allowed Fermin to score from third for the first run of the game.

The Colts answered with an inning similar to one of the Coyotes. After a lead off walk by Tyrone Pendergrass, John Anderson hit a single into left field to put runners on the corners for Bryan Frichter. Frichter, as Santana did in the top of the first, hit into a double play to score Pendergrass from third to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second inning, the Coyotes' offense gave Martinez some working room as the first two hitters reached with singles. Logan Wood then cleared the bases with a three run home run to put the score at 4-1. Alex Entrekin added to the lead with a solo home run to left field that made the score 5-1.

The Colts answered in the bottom of the second inning as Jason Crossland hit a leadoff home run to deep left field that cut the lead to four runs. Then Robert Mendoza single to center and then later came around to score on an RBI single by Pendergrass to but the score at 5-3.

After the Colts added a run to take the score to 5-4, the Coyotes' offense answered for Martinez once again. In the fifth inning, Entrekin started the inning off with a triple to deep center field. Fermin then brought in Entrekin from third with a ground out to second base. With the score 6-3, Robert Mendoza committed two errors to put runners at first and second for Daryl Jones. Jones smashed a double down the third base line to score Roche from second base and it allowed Santana to move over to third. Santana then scored on a sacrifice fly from Eric Gonzalez to make the score 8-4.

The Coyotes added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning on five hits. Patrick Gaylord had a two run single in the inning making him 3-for-5 on the night. The Colts added a run in the bottom of the ninth inning off an RBI double by Jose Toress.

Bryan Heaston, Bric Steed, and Clint Smith combined for four innings and they allowed one run on four hits preserving the win for Martinez.

The Coyotes and Colts will face off Sunday night for the second game of the series with the first pitch scheduled at 5:05 p.m. Toro Trevino will be on the mound for the Coyotes on Father's Day as the Colts will send Frank James to the hill.
