Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Harlingen WhiteWings (13-18) left fielder Bub Bergstrom stole what would have been a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth to preserve an 8-6 victory over the Laredo Broncos (15-15) tonight at Harlingen Field.
Down 8-4 entering the ninth, Anthony Bennett led off with an infield single to knock out Todd Lutz. Brian Daly came in and got the first two outs, but then gave up an RBI-double to Dwayne White and an RBI-single to Edgard Clemente to make it 8-6. Caleb Balbuena came in to face Luany Sanchez, who hit a fly ball to deep left field, but Bergstrom reached up and stopped the ball from landing in the WhiteWings bullpen to preserve the win and Balbuena's seventh save.
The WhiteWings got on the board in the first with two outs when Brian Nichols singled against Santo Hernandez, stole second, and scored on a double by Ryan Fox to make it 1-0.
Sanchez got that run back for the Broncos in the top of the second against Bobby Darling (1-3) with his sixth home run of the season, and fifth against the WhiteWings.
The WhiteWings exploded in the third against former WhiteWing Julian Williams (0-3) when Bub Bergstrom led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a wild throw. Kevin Griffin followed with an RBI-single. Nichols reached on a fielder's choice and Fox singled. One out later, David Fowler hit a three-run home run to make it 5-1.
The Broncos got one back in the fourth when White drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arnoldo Ponce to make it 5-2.
In the fourth, Griffin hit a one-out single and Nichols followed with an inside-the-park home run to make it 7-2.
Terry Roblez led off the fifth with a double and later scored on an RBI-single by Griffin to make it 8-2.
The Broncos got another one in the sixth when White led off with a walk, moved to second on an error, to third on a ground out, and scored on a Sanchez ground out to make it 8-3.
With one out in the eighth, Clemente, Sanchez and Ponce hit consecutive singles against Lutz to make it 8-4.
The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this three-game series tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (3-0) will start for the WhiteWings. The Broncos' starter has not yet been announced.
