Broncos Rally Falls Short in 8-6 Loss To Harlingen

Harlingen, TX-The Laredo Broncos had the tying run at the plate in the top of the 9th but were not able to get the victory as they fell to the Harlingen WhiteWings by a score of 8-6 at Harlingen Field on Saturday Night. The Broncos continue on this short 3 game road trip with the middle game of a 3 game series on Sunday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The WhiteWings got the scoring going in the bottom of the 1st inning. With two outs Brian Nichols singled and then stole 2nd base. The very next batter Ryan Fox would double down the left field line, scoring Nichols and making the score 1-0.

The Broncos would get on the board in the top of the 2nd inning. Luany Sanchez hit a solo home run, his 6th of the season to tie the game at 1.

The game would get interesting in the bottom of the 2nd inning. With two outs Broncos starter Santo Hernandez hit David Cardona in the head with a pitch. It was not intentional but Cardona thought it was and he started walking towards Hernandez. The benches emptied but no punches were thrown. Hernandez would get the 3rd out of the inning, and as he was walking off the mound, him and Cardona started arguing with each other and the benches emptied again to keep the two separated. Both Hernandez and Cardona were ejected from the game. Julian Williams would come into the game for the Broncos.

That incident seemed to fire up the WhiteWings in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Bub Bergstrom led off the inning reaching 2nd base on an error by 2nd baseman Matt Lawman. Then after a wild pitch Bergstrom scored on a fielder's choice hit by Griffin, when Ben Tinius' throw home was not in time. Brian Nichols would then be safe on a fielder's choice with Griffin forced out at 2nd base. Ryan Fox would then single putting 2 runners on base. With two outs David Fowler connected with a 3 run home run, his 5th of the season giving the WhiteWings a 5-1 lead.

Laredo would get a run back in the top of the 4th inning. Dwayne White led off with a walk and then stole 2nd base. He would then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and score on a sacrifice fly by Arnoldo Ponce making the score 5-2.

The WhiteWings would tack on some more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. With one out Kevin Griffin doubled and then would score on an inside the park home run by Brian Nichols. Nichols 7th homer of the season made the score 7-2.

Harlingen would get another run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Terry Roblez doubled to start the inning and would score on a single by Kevin Griffin extending the score to 8-2.

The Broncos would get a run in the top of the 6th inning. Dwayne White led off the inning with a walk and went to 2nd on an bad pickoff throw by pitcher Bobby Darling. He would advance to 3rd on a groundout by Edgard Clemente. White would then score on a ground out by luany Sanchez making the score Harlingen 8 and Laredo 3.

Laredo would inch closer in the top of the 8th inning. With one out Edgard Clemente singled and went to 3rd base on a single by Luany Sanchez. Then Arnoldo Ponce singled scoring Clemente, making the score 8-4.

The Broncos would do some scoring in the top of 9th. Anthony Bennett led off with a single and went to 2nd on a wild pitch. Then with 2 outs Dwayne White would double scoring Bennett. Edgard Clemente would follow with a single scoring White from 2nd, and bringing up Luany Sanchez who represented the tying run. Caleb Balbuena, the closer for the WhiteWings would then enter the game looking for the 1 out save. Sanchez drove a ball all the way to the wall in left field but the left fielder caught the ball at the wall to end the game, as the Broncos fell by a score of 8-6.

The Broncos scored 4 runs on 8 hits and committed 2 errors, while the WhiteWings scored 8 runs on 11 hits and committed 1 error.
