Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
EDINBURG, Texas- The Edinburg Coyotes were not only on the verge of losing Game 1 of an important three-game to the Laredo Broncos but also a two-game lead for the fourth playoff spot.
But Coyotes veteran and undisputed leader of the team, Eric Gonzalez wasn't going to let that happen as he brought in the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Coyotes to a 6-5 victory over the Broncos Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field bringing in Daryl Jones from third for the crucial win. Coyotes have now won five straight games.
The Coyotes (38-40) are now three games ahead of Laredo (37-45) for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Coyotes got on the boards in the bottom of the first after Argelis Nunez hit an RBI single to left field bringing in Angelo Fermin from third. With the bases loaded, Gonzalez reached first on a fielder's choice and brought in Gary Roche from third putting the score at 2-0. Mayobanex Santana then hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Jones for a 3-0 lead.
Coyotes added another run in the bottom of the third after Nunez scored from third off a fielder's choice hit by Coyotes' first baseman Robert Matlock giving the Coyotes a 4-0 edge.
Edinburg stretched their lead to five in the bottom of the fifth when Santana hit a solo home run over the left field wall. It was his third blast of the season.
But the Broncos began their comeback in the top of the sixth. Ben Tinius led the inning off with a single to left field. Sean Gamble followed with a walk and Anthony Bennett singled to left field brining in Tinius from second to put the score at 5-1. After Matt Imwalle walked, Edgard Clemente reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Gamble from third and advancing Bennett over to third. Dwayne White then hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Bennett and cutting the deficit to 5-3.
John Maschino went in for Aaron Guerra in the top of the seventh but Coyotes' manager Vince Moore may have regretted taking him out as Maschino allowed a two-run homer from Tinius tying the game at 5-5.
But in the bottom of the ninth, Jones hit a well placed ball to left field to advance all the way to second for a one-out double. Nunez was then intentionally walked. Jones then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Coyotes' centerfielder Gonzalez came through for his team once again hitting a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Jones for the game-winning run.
Coyotes and Broncos will play again tomorrow night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05.
