Cox To Pitch For Team USA, Thorp Added From Tampa

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced that RHP J.B. Cox will be taken off the active roster to participate for Team USA in the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. RHP Paul Thorp has been transferred to Trenton from Tampa (High-A Florida State League).

Cox is one of four Eastern League players on the Team USA Roster, along with Binghamton's Henry Owens, Reading's Zach Segovia and New Britain's Kevin Slowey. Cox has a 6-2 record with a 1.75 ERA in 41 games for the Thunder including three saves. Opponents are hitting just .196 against Cox. He did not allow a run between June 4th and July 23rd over the span of 15 games and 26 IP. During 2005, he went 1-2 with a 2.60 in 16 games for Tampa. He struck out 27 and walked five in 27.2 IP.

Cox, the 11th rated prospect in the Yankees system, was selected in the 2nd Round of the 2005 June Draft from the University of Texas. He recorded the final out in the 2005 NCAA Championship game for the Longhorns.

Thorp is 4-1 with a 0.96 ERA in 27 games for the Tampa Yankees including eight saves. Thorp has struck out 29 and walked nine in 37.2 IP. In his last six appearances for Tampa, he has recorded six saves and given up just two hits and no runs in seven innings of work. Thorp started the year with the Thunder and had a 0-1 record with a 5.87 ERA in six appearances.

Thorp recorded 25 saves for Tampa in 2005, which was 3rd in the Florida State League. He recorded saves in eight consecutive outings (5/11-27) en route to making the Florida State League All-Star Team. He was a 31st Round selection out of Baylor University in the 2002 June Draft.

Trenton has an off-day on Monday before beginning a three-game series in Harrisburg on Tuesday night.
