
Eastern League announces weekly award winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending August 13th:
Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending August 13th. The 22-year old had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .400 (10-for-25) with one double, two triples, one home run, seven runs scored, three RBI, one stolen base, two walks and a .720 slugging percentage in six games. The 6'1", 185 lb. speedster, who was ranked by Baseball America as the sixth best prospect in the Red Sox organization entering the season, had a hit in each game he played in last week, including three multiple hit games, and currently has a seven game hitting streak. Jacoby was selected by the Boston Red Sox as the 23rd overall selection in the first round of the June 2005 draft after hitting .406 with 19 doubles, six homers, 56 runs scored, 48 RBI and 26 stolen bases and being chosen as the PAC-10 Player of the Year during his junior season at Oregon State University.

Philip Hughes, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 13th. The 6'5", 220 lb. hurler made a pair starts for the Thunder last week and was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA. In his first start of the week, Hughes gave up one run on two hits while striking out six batters in five innings to earn a victory against Binghamton last Tuesday. In his second start of the week the 20-year old limited the Fisher Cats to two hits and two walks and struck out nine batters in five shutout innings of work in Trenton's win at New Hampshire on Sunday. Philip, who was ranked by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Yankees organization entering the season and is fourth in the league in ERA (2.50) and strikeouts (121), was selected by the New York Yankees as the 23rd overall selection in the first round of the June 2004 draft out of Foothill High School in Santa Ana, California.
