Altoona Curve News Release

Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher John Van Benschoten will take the mound for his first major league injury rehab start with the Altoona Curve in game one of Monday's 6:05 PM doubleheader at Connecticut. The 26-year old right-hander made his first appearance on the mound in a game since September 2004 last Tuesday for rookie-level Bradenton. Van Benschoten, the Pirates' first round selection in the 2001 June draft out of Kent State University, has undergone surgeries on both his right and left shoulders, forcing him to miss the entire 2005 season and most of this season. He went 1-3 with a 6.91 ERA in six games (five starts) for Pittsburgh during the 2004 season.

In other Curve news Monday, 35-year old right-hander Nerio Rodriguez has been added to the Curve roster and will start the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader against the Connecticut Defenders (AA/San Francisco Giants). To clear room on the roster for Rodriguez, left-hander James Johnson has returned to the Curve Disabled List.
