
Hughes named EL Pitcher of the Week

(Trenton, NJ)- The Eastern League announced today that Trenton Thunder RHP Philip Hughes has been named "Pitcher of the Week" for the week ending August 13th. Portland Sea Dogs OF Jacoby Ellsbury was named "Hitter of the Week"
This is the sixth time in the 2006 season in which a Thunder player has been named the winner of either award by the Eastern League. RHP Tyler Clippard and OF Shelley Duncan have each won their respective awards twice during the season, with INF Randy Ruiz being name "Hitter of the Week" once in 2006.
Hughes, 20, made a pair starts for the Thunder last week and was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA. In his first start of the week, Hughes gave up one run on two hits while striking out six batters in five innings to earn a victory against Binghamton last Tuesday. In his second start of the week the 20-year old limited the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to two hits and two walks and struck out nine batters in five shutout innings of work in Trenton's win at New Hampshire on Sunday.
Hughes, who was ranked by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Yankees organization entering the season and is fourth in the league in ERA (2.50) and strikeouts (121), was selected by the New York Yankees as the 23rd overall selection in the first round of the June 2004 draft out of Foothill High School in Santa Ana, California.

The Thunder returns to action on Tuesday against the Harrisburg Senators in Harrisburg, PA. Game time is 6:35 PM. Matt Childers (1-2, 2.48 starts for Trenton in the series opener against Harrisburg's Matt Chico (0-0, 5.40). After three games in Harrisburg, the Thunder return home this weekend for a three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs.
