
Cowen Named Alternate Captain For Team Canada

Spokane Chiefs defenseman Jared Cowen has been named as one of the alternate captains for Hockey Canada's National Men's Under-18 team that will compete at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. Cowen was one of 22 players, 10 from the WHL, named to the team on Tuesday.
Bill Peters, the former head coach of the Chiefs who led Spokane to the 2008 Memorial Cup Championship, is serving the same post for Team Canada.
In his rookie season, Cowen appeared in 68 regular season games, another 25 in the playoffs and scored four goals with 18 points. Cowen scored an empty net goal in Spokane's 4-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers in the Memorial Cup Final to help seal the victory. His +28 led all rookie defenseman in the WHL. In his first experience with Hockey Canada, Cowen helped Team West win the bronze medal at the World Under- 17 Hockey Challenge in January. Cowen finished the tournament with seven helpers in six games and was named the Player of the Game for Team West three times. Cowen was also named the Chiefs Rookie of the Year and the Western Conference Scholastic Player of the Year in 2007-08. Cowen was the first overall selection in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft.
