Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (28-15-1-3) shut out the Moncton Wildcats (21-17-5-1) 5-0 in Moncton on Saturday night. Two goals from Josh Lawrence and goals from Peter Reynolds, William Dufour, and Charlie DesRoches, led the Sea Dogs to their win against their New Brunswick rivals on the road.
Thomas Couture put up the shutout against his former teammates, stopping all 20 shots he faced in the win. Former Sea Dog Jonathan Lemieux was between the posts for Moncton and stopped 31 of the 36 shots he faced on the night.
The Sea Dogs struck early, scoring on the only power play of the period after Maxim Barbashev was sent off fourteen seconds into play. At 1:25, William Dufour scored his league leading 42nd goal of the season, ripping a shot to the back of the net.
Shots after the first were 12-10 for Saint John.
Three minutes into the second period the Sea Dogs penalty kill unit came out for the first time and were successful in killing an interference call against Olivier Picard.
Three minutes later, Mathis Cloutier of Moncton was sent off. This penalty was killed, but just as he was leaving the box, the Sea Dogs were able to score their second of the night when Josh Lawrence picked up the rebound off an attempt from Raivis Kristians Ansons.
The Sea Dogs wrapped up the period with two more goals, Charlie DesRoches at 14:53 and Peter Reynolds at 19:15, and took a 4-0 lead into the final frame.
Shots after the second were 22-15 for Saint John.
The Sea Dogs continued to control the play, outshooting the Wildcats 14-5 in the final frame, but only scored one more goal in the game, near the end of the period. Vincent Despont and Maxim Barbashev were sent off at 11:07 for fighting and intensity continued to build throughout the period.
A few more penalties to the Wildcats gave Saint John's power play another opportunity, on which Josh Lawrence capitalized, making it a 5-0 game at 16:28.
The game wrapped up with a pair of roughing calls to Ryan Francis and Thomas Darcy, with an additional unsportsmanlike conduct call going to Francis, at 17:48, but Thomas Couture maintained his shutout for the rest of the game and the Sea Dogs won 5-0.
Final shots were 36-20 for Saint John.
