Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles executed a late rally to earn a point in the standings but fell in overtime 4-3 to the visiting Sherbrooke Phoenix Saturday night in Sydney.
It was a fast paced first period, but goals were not easy to come by, with both teams failing to score on the power play and during a four on four situation. The only red light of the opening frame came at the 14:17 mark when Joshua Roy, the league's leading scorer, was able to extend his point streak to 18 games by jabbing it over the goal line in a scramble.
Special teams would become a factor in the second stanza with Sherbrooke's Ethan Gauthier in the box. Unfortunately for the home side, it was Phoenix defenseman David Spacek blasting a heavy low shot by Rémi Delafontaine to notch a short handed marker and stretch the lead to 2-0. However, on the same power play, Sean Larcohelle found the back of the net from the right faceoff circle and it was a 2-1 game.
A bad break for the Eagles would help restore the two goal margin for Sherbrooke. The puck bounced out of the left wing corner and Hugo Primeau was all alone in front- his shot appeared to go off both posts and a crossbar before finding its way over the goal line. It was 3-1 Sherbrooke at the intermission.
Sherbrooke tightened things up in the third period, making chances harder to come by as they employed a conservative forecheck. Perhaps in an effort to spark his team, Eagles blueliner FJ Buteau engaged in a spirited scrap with Jean-Raphaël Roy, ending the night for both players with the fight coming with less than five minutes to play in the period.
WIth opportunities tough to come by, Eagles coach Chadd Cassidy elected to call a timeout and lift Delafontaine for an extra attacker with 4:07 to play in the period. It paid dividends- less than a minute later, Jérémy Langlois ripped a shot through traffic that Cam Squires was able to tip by Ivan Zhigalov at 16:51.
Delafontaine returned to the net for just 44 seconds, and was then off to the bench for the extra attacker once more. And the Eagles went back to what worked the first time, a shot by Langlois from the blueline. This time there was no tip, but the tying goal beat Zhigalov with just under 100 seconds to play to tie the game. The Eagles continued to pressure after the goal, but the game was destined for overtime.
Overtime would not take long to decide a winner. Sherbooke quickly had numbers in the Eagles zone- Roy flipped the puck to Xavier Parent who put it over Delafontaine to secure the win for the Phoenix as they stretched their winning streak to five games.
Zhigalov stopped 26 of 29 shots in picking up the win, while Delafontaine stopped 28 of 32 in the loss.
The Eagles home stand continues with a pair of home games against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, beginning Thursday night at 7 PM! Thursday will be Irish Night at the Nest. Season ticket holders are asked to use their March 19th ticket for the game.
