Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks and Mississippi RiverKings met for the fifth and final time this season Sunday evening at Independence Events Center. Andrew Courtney would score his first three goals as a professional and record the third hat trick by a Mavericks' player this season. Robby Nolan was once again solid between the pipes, as he posted his league-leading seventh shutout of the season.

Recently acquired rookie forward Andrew Courtney got his first goal as a professional and member of the Mavericks five minutes into the first period to give Missouri an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Jardine got his 30th assist of the season on the goal. Toby Lafrance was given an assist as well on Courtney's score.

Nick Sirota extended his point streak to six games at the 5:13 mark of the second period on a strange shorthanded goal. After failing to score on a breakaway attempt, Sirota gathered his rebound and banked it in off of defenseman Steve Rizer to double the Mavericks' lead to 2-0. The Mavericks would soon take a stranglehold on the game halfway through the second period. Brandon Coccimiglio roofed a shot over Larry Sterling's shoulder to put the Mavs up 3-0 at the 10:29 mark of the period. Derek Knowles was given an assist on the goal. 30 seconds later, Andrew Courtney ripped home his second goal of the game. Lafrance got his second assist of the game on the goal. Late in the period, a fracas broke out around Larry Sterling and a line brawl ensued. After the dust settled, Carlyle Lewis and Nathan O'Nabigon were all given game misconducts for being the second man into a fight, which warrants an automatic ejection. For Mississippi, Darrell Stoddard and Matt Summers received fighting majors and game misconducts.

Sirota would get his second goal of the game just 29 seconds into the third and final period, putting the Mavs up 5-0. Ray DiLauro and Todd Griffith were credited with the assists. Andrew Courtney recorded his third goal of the game and the third hat trick by the Mavericks this season. Courtney's hat trick was also the first three goals of his professional career. Derek Knowles got his second assist of the game and Jared Lavender added his name to the score sheet with an assist as well. The Mavs capped off the scoring with a goal from Ryan Jardine just 42 seconds later. Sirota got his first assist of the game and extended a Mavs' season high six-game assist streak. Blake Forsyth got his first point of the game on an assist on the Jardine goal. The Mavs would keep Mississippi scoreless for the remainder of the game and preserve Robby Nolan's seventh shutout of the season.

The Mavericks finished the night one-for-five on the power play and racked up 35 shots on Sterling and Alex Pechurskiy. The RiverKings finished zero-for-eight with man power advantages and were held to just 22 shots. Both teams combined for over 100 penalty minutes and four game misconducts. With a victory by the Bloomington PrairieThunder over the Fort Wayne Komets, the Mavs remained in a third place tie, but increased their lead over idle Wichita to four points in the Turner Conference standings.

The Mavericks have already punched their ticket to the 2011 Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs, and the first two home playoff games are on sale now. Fans can purchase playoff tickets any of the following ways: online at www.Ticketmaster.com, over the phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the Independence Events Center Box Office. Should the Mavericks secure a top four seed, the first two home playoff games will be on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2.

Missouri wraps up their home schedule for the 2010-11 regular season this Tuesday as they face the Wichita Thunder at 7:05 pm at Independence Events Center. Then the Mavericks will wrap up the regular season with two games in south Texas with games against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday Night and Laredo Bucks on Saturday.
