Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Cougars continued their winning ways on the road as they came into Modern Woodmen Ballpark on Tuesday and took the first game of the series from the River Bandits 7-3. The Cougars (13-4, 58-29) featured stellar defense all game while Quad Cities (10-8, 45-42) committed three costly errors.
Edison Frias (5-4) was one out away from finishing off the first inning perfectly, but Kyle Schwarber continued it with a two-out double. Jacob Rogers followed with a two-bagger of his own and the Cougars led 1-0. Once again Frias was one good pitch away from exited the inning, but newly acquired Kevin Brown poked a double down the left field line to bring home another run and make it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars. The Cougars went on to score in each of the first four innings, including a solo home run from the new guy in Brown. Schwarber capped off the scoring run with his second RBI double of the day in the fourth.
Paul Blackburn (8-2) worked five innings of two-run baseball. The right-hander had a rocky second inning where he allowed three walks around a two-run home run, but Quad Cities didn't see the scoreboard again until the sixth.
More solid pitching came from Zak Hermans in the sixth through eight frames before Corbin Hoffner finished off the ninth.
The defense significantly pitched in as all three outfielders made impressive catches and Carlos Penalver also made a stellar play at short-stop.
The Cougars will look to guarantee a series win with Daury Torrez (9-3, 2.89) on the mound against Quad Cities' left-hander Blake Sims. First pitch from Modern Woodmen Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
