Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars earned their first victory of the 2023 season by splitting a doubleheader with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday. After a 4-1 loss in game one, the Cougars bats broke out for six runs while Jack Fox tossed five innings of one-run baseball in a 6-1 victory.
In game one, the Cougars (1-2) jumped out to a quick lead against Fargo-Moorhead (2-1) starter Davis Feldman (1-0). In the bottom of the first, Armond Upshaw led off the game with a single. Two batters later, Cornelius Randolph ripped a double to center field to score Upshaw and make it 1-0.
In his Cougars debut, Kane County starter Tyler Beardsley tossed four no-hit innings before allowing two hits in the fifth. Fargo-Moorhead managed to get on the board in the sixth against Cougars' reliever Keith Rogalla (0-1). Evan Alexander led off the inning with a single before an error by shortstop Pete Kozma put runners at the corners. Leo Pina then grounded into a double play, but Alexander came in to score on the play and tie the game at one.
With the game tied at one entering the seventh and final inning, Sam Dexter doubled with one out. Then, Rogalla fired a wild pitch that took an odd bounce off the backstop allowing Dexter to score from second. Fargo went on to add two more runs in the frame and held on for a 4-1 win.
After falling in the first game, the Cougars responded in a big way in game two. Starter Jack Fox (1-0) pitched a gem, allowing just one run on three hits across five innings of work. Fresh off 11 wins last season, Fox earned a victory in his 2023 debut.
For the second straight game, Kane County jumped out to an early lead against Fargo starter Correlle Prime (0-1). With one out in the bottom of the first, Galli Cribbs singled and Randolph followed up by drawing a walk. Jimmy Kerrigan then grounded out, but Galli Cribbs advanced two bases on the play to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.
Fargo tied the game on a Manny Boscan single in the top of the fourth, but Kane County struck back in the bottom half. The Cougars sent nine men to the plate in the inning and scored four runs in the frame. Pete Kozma started the scoring by coming in on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Randolph knocked in another run with a single to right field. Kerrigan rounded out the four-run frame with a two-run single to put the Cougars up 6-1.
Following Fox's departure, CJ Eldred, Spencer Van Scoyoc, and Daniel Bies combined to pitch two scoreless frames to end the ballgame.
After two off days, the Cougars will host the Chicago Dogs for a three-game series at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Cougars will also be home next weekend to welcome the Sioux City Explorers. For tickets and more information call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com/tickets.
